Video Game Print Ads from 1990s Comic Books I scanned a bunch of retro game ads that appeared in various comic books from the 1990s - back when I was obsessed with polybags, backing boards, variant covers and keeping things mint (good times!). To advertise a game back then, you needed to: Use a pun or double-meaning; or Note the games technical prowess While modern ads today dont really do much of (1) anymore, we still see lots of (2), which is kinda sad. Ten years on, the market is still being driven by graphics, not gameplay. Oh well. Looking back at these ads, I was surprised that: Some of the games even existed (i.e. never heard of them before) Some of the games look quite good (i.e. might be worth tracking down and trying) A lot of text to describe/explain the game Acclaim did a lot of comic book advertising, which might help explain why they ended up buying Valiant Comics (who owned Turok, Shadowman, etc.) Anyway, check out the gallery at Photobucket. download  file  now

View available updates from terminal without updating the system Ubuntu I find it a faster way to install updates on my Ubuntu machine from terminal rather then using a GUI package manager. sudo apt-get update  // collects information on updated packages from the repos sudo apt-get upgrade // install upgrades for packages for which updates are available The commands above are cool, of course, and quick to type, but one thing always annoyed me - I could only see what was updated after I actually initialized the process of upgrading the system. Well, not cool (GUI package manager would show what packages are upgradable). How to view available updates from terminal without updating the system : apt-get --just-print upgrade apt-get -s upgrade These 2 show the very same output (they both simulate an upgrade, dont really do it). Using Navisworks To Quickly Extract Any Data from an IFC into Excel The data analysis and extraction capabilities of Navisworks are often overlooked. In a recent case, I had an IFC file (from ArchiCAD) and wanted to extract only the Room Names and Numbers to Excel. Here is how I did it... 1) Append the IFC to Navisworks, then open Navisworks Options and add the Quick Properties as shown below: 2) Create a Find Items search with these criteria: 3) Once all the Spaces are selected, open the Selection Inspector. The columns here are built from Quick Properties. Click Export CSV. 4) Open or Import the CSV into Excel, and ensure to set comma as the delimeter. 5) Here you can see the information in Excel. 6) Interestingly, in Tekla BimSight I couldnt find the equivalent property for the Room Name... It is quite easy to modify the search criteria and Quick Properties in the steps above to suit the type of data you want to extract from any IFC file. download  file  now
